Former Kilifi councillors demand their dues before polls

More than 400 former councillors from Kilifi county have appealed to the government to pay them their send-off dues before the August 9 polls.

They said most of them are living in abject poverty while others are ailing and the continuous delay in payment will send them to their early graves.

They spoke in Malindi on Sunday, after a meeting to discuss their political game plan at the county level.

They resolved to fully participate in the polls and play their part in the formation of the next county government.

Last year, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani announced that  government would pay the ex-councillors countrywide a minimum of Sh200,000 for those who served for two terms.

Those who served four terms and above were to receive a maximum of Sh600,000.

During the meeting attended by 35 councillors from the former defunct Malindi municipal council and county council, some of them looked sick and physically challenged.

Peterson Kafulo, former Malindi mayor, said even though they were not satisfied with the amount government plans to pay, the amounts are yet to reach them.

He said MPs are paid a lot of money yet the councillors are getting peanuts.

Kafulo who is the coordinator of all ex-councillors said they will fight untill they get their dues.

Ngalla Mwagandi, former deputy mayor said becaused they remained silent in previous elections the campaigns, nominations were awarded to people from Nyanza.

Agnes Thoya a former councillor said it was sad that they have been forgotten by the government.

“During our time we were only getting allowances and not salaries but why are they not giving us our send off package,” she said.

Thoya appealed to Treasury CS and President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and ensure their dues are paid soon.
