City lawyer George Kithi has denied rumours that he has bowed out of the Kilifi senatorial race to vie for the Kilifi governorship position.

Kithi dismissed the rumour as propaganda by his competitors to confuse his supporters.

He said he is still vying for the senate position.

Kithi spoke at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital after visiting sick children on Christmas day.

“I am still concentrating on the senator position which I believe best suits me,” he said.

Last week, Kithi attended a high profile meeting at Tezo in Kilifi North where it is said he was nominated as the most preferred candidate to vie for the governorship position on a Pamoja African Alliance ticket.

During his address to staff at the hospital, Kithi unknowingly hinted he would be gunning for the gubernatorial seat.

“It is my desire to work with all the medical personnel to boost their morale. They are working selflessly, attending to our relatives while we enjoy the holidays.

"I know we have a challenge with the infrastructure but in the next government which I am sure I will be part of, I will make sure we improve on the infrastructure,” Kithi said.

Kithi is the only senatorial aspirant in Kilifi who has sustained a campaign throughout the year.

He has however not disclosed the party he will use in his bid for the seat.

The lawyer who is from the larger Giriama subtribe of the Mijikenda seeks to end the negotiated democracy that has existed in Kilifi since inception of counties.

There is an unwritten rule in Kilifi county where the governor position is reserved for the Giriama who are the majority. The deputy governor position for the Rabai and senatorial from the Chonyi who are the second majority.

Kilifi has seven out of the nine subtribes of the Mijikenda.

The remaining two are found mostly in Kwale county.

In the senatorial seat, Kithi is facing the incumbent Stewart Madzayo (Chonyi), Fikirini Jacobs (Giryama), Ben Kai (Chonyi), Shukrani Mwabonje (Chonyi) and Wilberforce Mwinga (Rabai)
