The Lamu government has disbursed Sh37.6 million worth of bursaries to needy university and college students.
At least 2,200 cheques for students who successfully applied for the bursaries are ready for collection from ward administrators’ offices.
Delivery of cheques to various institutions started last week. The majority were sent to Chuka University, Dedan Kimathi University, Egerton University, JKUAT, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, Kenya Medical Training College and Kenya Methodist University.
Others were sent to Kenyatta University, Kilifi College of Accountancy, Maseno University, Moi University, Pwani University, Technical University of Mombasa, Umma University, University of Nairobi and Vision ECDE training centre.
The county bursary committee has since handed over cheques for Mkomani, Bahari, Faza, Kiunga, Witu, Mkunumbi, Kiunga and Hindi wards.
Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha urged parents with students in colleges and universities to apply for bursaries.
The county government has set aside Sh250 million in this financial year to cater to 2,000 students under the secondary school full scholarship programme, 8,500 students under secondary school normal bursaries and 2,200 students in colleges and universities.
Lamu Education executive Paul Thairu said bursaries provide a platform for educational progress for bright students from needy backgrounds.
“The objective is to put them on the same pedestal as their counterparts from privileged backgrounds so they can all compete on a level platform even as they pursue their dreams,” he said.
