Muslim clerics in Lamu have urged the community not to involve gay men in any communal and social activities, especially weddings.

They said they want the group prohibited from taking part in wedding preparations and celebrations saying it is a bad omen to the newlyweds.

The elders have alleged that homosexuals are normally invited to help prepare the brides by doing their makeup and helping them with their wedding gowns.

Led by the Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics chairperson (Lamu branch) Abdulkadir Mohamed, they said shunning the group is a sure way to punish them and act as a deterrence for those planning to go the same way.

He claimed that the community has played a huge role in promoting homosexuality and making it look like it is okay.

The cleric said it was embarrassing and worrying that during weddings, homosexuals are allegedly allowed to entertain guests and mingle freely with the newlyweds yet Islam prohibits their sexual orientation.

He said such practices go against the culture and heritage of Lamu and Africa as a continent.

“We go against Islam when we invite such people to communal gatherings as though we are not aware their choice of life is shunned by our religion and culture,” Mohamed said.

The cleric claimed that the presence of such people at weddings is a bad omen as it angers God and attracts curses to the new marriage.

He attributed the many divorces in the region due to such decisions and asked people to refrain from having homosexuals taking part in their celebrations.
