Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi and Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro on Saturday differed over the formation of a Coast political party. Mung’aro arrived at the homecoming party while Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga was telling the residents to ignore his governor ambitions.

“I have heard what Gunga was saying about political ambitions but let me say that time has come for Coast leaders to come under one political party,” said an angry Mung’aro.

He said Coast leaders should join Ganze MP Peter Shehe’s FPK and build it as a party for the region, “...or suggest a different name for the party. This will enable us to have a strong bargaining power as a region in the national politics.”

However, Kingi dismissed the proposal as an unachievable dream. He said it will be difficult to unite all Coast leaders. “You cannot talk of the unity of the Coast region while as leaders from the same county we cannot move towards the same direction. We need to settle our scores before moving to other counties to rally for the same,” said Kingi.

He said the disunity among the region’s leaders is to blame for Coast freedom fighters being forgotten. “Our heroes from this region were not featured during the Kenya@50 celebrations.

We need to work together as leaders,” Kingi said. The leaders were at Shehe’s homecoming in Jaribuni Secondary School. Mung’aro is Kingi’s main critic in the county and has accused him of failing residents.

Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga said the poor relationship between the two leaders will derail development and shame the county’s leadership. “You cannot speak of inheriting a wife of someone who is not yet dead,” he said.
