Farmers in Kiambu county have cited lack of sources as the reason for failing to plant on time.

Solomon Njenga, a farmer from Kinale ward in Kiambu says rains have many times caught them without seeds to plant.

He said they are unable to borrow soft loans to buy seeds, fertilisers and other farm inputs.

"When one borrows to plant, the time to start repaying the soft loans starts even before you harvest. Meaning, people hardly borrow money to support crop farming" Njenga said.

He said the situation has reduced many people in fertile areas to beggars.

"Some of our farmers have been found off guard by rains since they do not have anything to plant be it vegetables or grains such as maize or beans" Njenga said.

Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi said his administration will not allow fertile areas of the county to stay idle.

He said the government will support local farmers with seeds, fertilisers and technical support from agriculture extension officers.

"We want to ensure that all lands lying in areas where farming can be successful have been planted and harvests done" Wamatangi said.

He said part of his manifesto is about fighting hunger, by supporting large and small scale farmers.

"Supporting small scale farmers, once supporters nearly all villages since so many families have a piece of land where they plant vegetables, maize and beans" he noted.

He spoke at Wangunja stadium in Kinale ward, when he distributed certified maize seeds, fertilisers and fingerlings to farmers.

"We shall plant every seed we have on the bare lands that our people have. The maize will support us to add more food for sale and for consumption" said Dorcas Wanja, a resident.

Wamatangi said President William Ruto will ensure that food prices go down.
