It has been a tough journey being a single parent to his twin boys and a jobless widower.
The pendulum swung to extremes when Omondi left home with heavily pregnant wife Maureen Anyango for Mama Lucy hospital, expecting a quick and safe delivery.
Though their healthy twin boys were successfully delivered, his wife did not make it out of the facility alive.
She succumbed to postpartum bleeding.
The Star followed up with Omondi on how life has been five months after the death of his wife. He said it has been a rough ride and he is tackling one day at a time.
The boys are now almost five months old. They live with his wife’s elder sister but Omondi ensures he creates time every morning and evening to spend time and bond with them. He plays with them and changes their diapers.
“I come to see them every evening and morning, like right now I’m with them,” he said.
His sister-in-law juggles caring for her own children and taking care of the twins.
Omondi sells smokies and chapatis to make ends meet.
He said his wife had a makeshift eatery, but it died with her as “I don’t know how to cook most of the meals she was selling there.”
The proceeds from his business are barely enough to sustain his needs, and that is why he opted to have his sister-in-law step in.
“The children are very demanding. I could not afford raising them on formula milk. I give them porridge, dairy milk and soup. It is so much strain,” Omondi said.
But life has to move on, he added.
Omondi said that although various state agencies, including the Senate, are investigating the death of his wife, it has all been motion but no movement.
“Except [Nairobi] Senator Edwin Sifuna, most politicians have filled me with their empty words and promises. After they say good things, it has only been me and my boys,” he said.
When the news of his wife’s death broke late last year, he said, many politicians in the city attempted to reach out to him.
“Sifuna is the one who gave me some cash for upkeep and it really helped me with buying essentials for the children. I’m yet to hear from others who reached out.”
Omondi said he awaits the outcome of the Senate probe into the matter. The DCI has also conducted a probe but the outcome remains unknown.
“I don’t know what became of the investigations but I hope someday I will receive justice. Someone should answer for death of my wife.”
