A driver and her two passengers died on the spot on Monday when the car they were travelling in collided head-on with a matatu in Limuru.
The accident happened at Njira ya Ngenia along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Eyewitnesses said the saloon car, which was heading towards Nakuru, was attempting to overtake another car when it collided with the matatu heading in the opposite direction.
“We heard a loud bang and people screaming for help. We went to rescue them and some were bleeding. It was an ugly scene,” Jeremiah Mbugua said.
The accident led to a traffic jam that stretched about two kilometres on both sides of the road.
Traffic police officers, led by Tigoni base commander George Onsongo, cleared the highway.
Onsongo told journalists that the driver of the saloon car and her two passengers died on the spot. Some passengers in the matatu were seriously injured, he said.
Onsongo urged drivers to be careful to reduce accidents.
“We are urging drivers to be more careful and drive their vehicles at a speed that they can control so that we can reduce fatalities on our roads. It is painful to lose loved ones,” he said.
Survivors were rushed to Kikuyu Hospital, Limuru Nursing Home and Cottage Hospital in Limuru town.
The wreckage of the vehicles was towed to Tigoni police station.
