Siaya AP line on Thursday morning. A senior sergeant died in a house fire on September 2, 2021

A Siaya-based senior sergeant of the Administration Police died in a house fire on Thursday morning.

Siaya county commissioner Mohammed Barre said it was not clear what caused the 8.40am fire.

He said firefighters from Siaya county government were immediately called in to put out the fire.

"We don't know what happened. What we know for now is that one of our officers died in a house fire," Barre said.

He said police officers were combing the scene for clues.

"They will tell us what happened, including what might have caused the fire," Barre said.

Siaya Central subcounty police commander Benedict Mwangangi said the officer was alone in the house at the time of the incident.

He said the entire house, which is located within the Siaya AP line, was completely destroyed by the fire.

"His colleagues who rushed to the scene found him already dead. His charred remains have been taken to the county referral hospital in Siaya town," Mwangangi said.

The deceased's personal belongings were burnt to ashes.

"His colleagues managed to remove their household goods before the fire spread to the adjacent units," Mwangangi said.

He said investigations have been launched. On Thursday morning, he led a team of officers, among them DCI detectives, to the AP living quarters to establish exactly what happened.

The police boss did not disclose the name of the victim because immediate family members had not been notified.

"We are talking to his colleagues to piece together his last movements and try to understand what may have led to this," Mwangangi said.
