BABY Fidelis Muthoni, whose family was allegedly conned out of Sh2.8 million for her bone surgery, will begin treatment in Canada today following government intervention.
In a Facebook post, nurse Mwari Njoroge said the 15-month-old baby and her mother Martha Wambui touched down in Toronto, Ontario, on Saturday.
“I thank the Kenyan government, Dr Peter Wanyoike and all my fellow Kenyans for pouring your hearts out and working so hard to support baby Fidelis,” she said.
The family was allegedly duped by their cousin Benson Wanjau, who runs Hope Foundation, an organisation that helps children living with disability.
Wanjau is in police custody waiting for the mention of his case on Friday.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wairia contributed Sh800,000 to help Fidelis and her mother fly to Canada.
Fidelis will be in Canada for six months, where she will undergo reconstructive surgery on her bone defect known as frontal encephalocele.
The family from Saba Saba in Murang’a South had earlier missed a deadline and pleaded with the doctors to give them more time to source for funds.
Wanjau had solicited funds from the public through social media between March 27 and July 25, only to withdraw them without consulting the family.
In a post on his Facebook page, ‘Wanjau Alejandro’ said the allegations were false.
