President William Ruto is later this month expected to lay the foundation stone for the construction of phase I of 320 units affordable housing project in Majengo-Talai, Kericho.
Kericho county commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo said construction has already started.
He spoke during the handing over of the site to the contractor.
The county commissioner said the contractor will pull down the structures on the land and clear the bushes, then erect a fence around the construction site.
Kitiyo said youth in Kericho town equipped with building and construction skills will get jobs since the contractor will source manpower locally.
“The Housing department and our local committee have officially handed over the construction site to the contractor who is starting the project immediately. We hope that by next week, the project will be ready for the laying of the foundation stone,” he said.
Kenneth Owigo, the contractor and head of projects for PADAA Enterprises Limited, said they will execute the project with excellence as required by the government.
He said they will start with planning, surveying and fencing before the foundation stone is laid.
“The construction of the 320 units consists of one, two and three-bedroom houses for affordable housing. Social housing units will have one and two rooms. In addition, shops will also be part of the 320 units,” Owigo said.
The Affordable Housing Programme is an initiative by the national government targeting the delivery of decent and affordable housing to low and middle-income households.
