The Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) has earned the prestigious Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI) recognition.

The fete, according to Managing Director George Kubai, marks a major milestone in the country’s push for green and inclusive finance. The award was conferred in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Kubai said the recognition underscores AFC’s growing role in steering Kenya’s agricultural sector toward climate resilience and sustainability.

He said the Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI) Certification makes AFC the first institution in Kenya to achieve the globally recognised sustainability credential.

The certification highlights AFC’s commitment to aligning agricultural financing with international sustainability standards while supporting Kenya’s transition to a green and climate-resilient economy.

“We are honoured to receive the Sustainability Certification, a recognition that reinforces AFC’s leadership in advancing sustainable agricultural finance,” said Kubai.

“This milestone affirms our role as a trailblazer in sustainability initiatives. Looking ahead, AFC remains steadfast in its commitment to growing the sustainable finance portfolio in line with our Strategic Plan, empowering farmers, strengthening value chains, and building resilience against climate change.”

Kubai also acknowledged the support of the government, the AFC Board, and staff, as well as the European Organization for Sustainable Development (EOSD), which oversees the SSCI certification process.

Congratulating AFC, Arshad Rab, Chairman of the International Council of Sustainability Standards for Value-Driven Financial Institutions and CEO of EOSD, praised the institution’s leadership.

“This achievement reflects the unwavering commitment of the Corporation’s top leadership, a vision driven most notably by the Managing Director, Mr. George Kubai,” said Rab.

“This dedication will ensure that Kenya’s agriculture remains highly productive, resilient, and prepared to address future challenges, including climate change, competitiveness in international markets, and food security both domestically and globally.”

The SSCI certification positions AFC to attract new partnerships and enhance its capacity to finance climate-smart agricultural projects.

The corporation said the recognition strengthens its ability to deliver inclusive, impact-driven solutions that empower farmers and safeguard livelihoods.

"With the certification, AFC is expected to scale up innovations that reduce risks in agriculture, unlock value across value chains, and drive Kenya’s ambition of becoming a climate-smart agricultural hub," said Kubai.
