Safaricom taps KCB director for key job

She joins the list of latest changes at Safaricom as CEO Peter Ndegwa continues to build his own team.

Safaricom's new Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Masese Waititu.

Safaricom has appointed Kenya Commercial Bank's  Group Director for Corporate Banking, Esther Masese Waititu as its Chief Financial Services Officer.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, Esther will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to Safaricom's financial services business.

In the new portfolio, she will lead financial services tribes and teams, through the development of financial products, services and solutions for consumers and enterprises.

Masese's financial services background spans 20 years  having worked at Standard Bank, Standard Chartered and NCBA.

She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of East Africa, Baraton, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Liverpool, UK.

“Esther Masese Waititu has been appointed Chief Financial Services Officer effective 21st February 2023, subject to regulatory approval,” Safaricom said in statement.

She joins the list of latest changes at Safaricom as CEO Peter Ndegwa who replaced Bob Collymore in April 2020 continues to build his own team.

Prior to joining KCB, Esther was at Stanbic for 10 years, having joined the bank in 2011 as a Regional Product Head for Transactional Products and Services, East Africa.

Later on in 2017, she was promoted to the role of Country Head, Client Coverage, at Stanbic Bank Zambia, in 2020.

Esther worked at Standard Chartered Bank for 5 years, between 2006 and 2011 in Relationship Management and Product Management capacities, at NCBA formerly Commercial Bank of Africa.

Top executives who have exited Safaricom in recent times include Sylvia Mulinge (chief customer officer), Debra Mallowah (chief business development officer), Joseph Ogutu (head of special projects ) as well as Kris Senanu and Rita Okuthe, who were chief enterprise business officers.
