Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has criticised the police for choosing to use fatal means in solving matters.

In a statement on Monday, Karua joined Kenyans in questioning the alarming events that led to the murder of renowned Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif.

"Why shoot to kill rather than to immobilize whatever the case?" she asked.

Karua was responding to a statement by the National Police Service that acknowledged the shooting was done by one of its officers.

NPS said it regretted Sunday's tragic shooting that left the journalist dead, from two bullet wounds.

He was shot in the head and shoulder.

"National Police Service regrets this unfortunate incident. Competent authorities are currently investigating the incident for appropriate action," the statement released by police spokesperson Bruno Shioso read.

Sharif was travelling along Kwenia farm/Kamukuru marram road within marram in Kajiado County when the GSU officers shot him.

He was with his brother, Khurram Ahmed, who sustained injuries and was hospitalised.

Police said it was a case of mistaken identity after Sharif's car allegedly defied a roadblock order.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since taken over the investigation.

Earlier on Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he had a telephone conversation with President William Ruto concerning the murder.

"Just had a telephonic call with Kenyan President William Ruto about the tragic death of Arshad Sharif in Kenya. I requested him to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the shocking incident. He promised all-out help including fast-tracking the process of return of the body to Pakistan," he tweeted.
