Every thought is a vehicle. When you decide to incubate (think) a thought, you enter the cab, and it takes you to a specific destination. James Allen, British philosophical writer and author of, As a Man Thinketh, explains: “You are today where your thoughts have brought you, and you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” Here, your desires are irrelevant, and your thinking determines where you end up.
Your thinking can make or break you. I know it sounds cliché, but are people paying attention to how they think? It is common for people to spend a lifetime thinking negative thoughts while expecting positive results. Generally, people are not careful to design their thinking for long-term success. It is vital because successful people think differently from others.
Are you careful or careless about your thinking? What kind of thoughts do you entertain? Where will your current way of thinking take you, and do you like the destination? Your success or failure depends on your thinking. So, it’s time to face the hard truth about how you think.
The leadership guru, John C. Maxwell, said that: “What we think determines who we are and who we are determines what we do.” The formula is simple: thinking, becoming, doing. Do you see the connection? Do you understand how the formula works? Let me explain further.
Thinking: Everything starts with thoughts. To achieve certain goals and desires, you must connect to specific thoughts. You cannot attain wealth by thinking poverty thoughts. So, if you have a dream, find out the kind of thinking required to get you there and connect. Otherwise, your dream may go unfulfilled because you’re not aligned with the thoughts associated with your vision.
Becoming: Every thought that you embrace changes you. It’s how sustained thinking works. When you lock in (or stay with) an idea over a prolonged period and permit it to grow in your mind, you become the idea. Your perspective aligns with it, and your beliefs change accordingly. This is how people embody ideas. For instance: Barack Obama personified hope and Nelson Mandela, freedom. These men caught a thought, stayed with it, and became it.
Doing: When you become a thought, there is only one outcome – action. Anyone who embodies an idea will be bound to act. At this point, they obey the dictates of the idea; in other words, they become a prisoner of the thought, and it shapes their existence. Be careful what you think.
