Growth means leaving your current station for the next level. In this process, displacement is necessary. You must be prepared to let go of some things to attain the next level. Growth does not make you the same – it changes you. Although, some people want the benefits of growth without its inconveniences. They cannot conceive the concept of displacement because they believe they can get new results with old thinking. However, if you are not ready to discard your old ways of thinking, you’re not prepared to grow.
The first inconvenience you experience in the growth process is the pressure of letting go of old mindsets. Yes, pressure. Old thinking is not changed without pain. This way of thinking has produced results for you in the past and must now change. It is a challenging process that requires you to embrace a new perspective.
The inconvenience of thinking differently often discourages people from going through the growth process. One reason for this is the threat to the benefits enjoyed by old thought patterns; often, it causes uncertainty and fear in people. Since new thinking is unfamiliar. People wonder if they would get the same or better results. Consequently, some people resist change.
Growth requires a change in structure, and it can be an inconvenience. For instance, if you decide to pursue an MBA to advance your career, your time structure would have to change. It could involve late-night and weekend studies, change in social activities, or other unforeseen inconveniences. The structure of your life would need to change to accommodate your growth plan. You would need to reorganise your life and resources to achieve your goal.
To reach certain levels of growth, you may have to face the inconvenience of changing your association. It means that some of the people with whom you interact socially may have to change. Here, the saying that, "birds of a feather flock together,” does apply. This part of the growth process can be unsettling, but if you do not disassociate from certain people, you might as well forget your goal. To attain the next level, letting go of some relationships is one sacrifice you must be willing to make.
