To counter the challenges posed by turbulent economic conditions, a shifting market landscape, and the volatility of currency exchange rates, Simbi Roses, a flower farm with a 28-year history, had no option but to embrace a strategic diversification plan to remain afloat.

Simbi Roses is one of a tiny number of floriculture farms remaining after many others succumbed to unrelenting difficult operating environments and unfair competition as well as induced buyouts.

The farm had to expand its scope beyond flowers to encompass a multifaceted approach.

This saw it venture into avocado and macadamia farming, as well as venturing into beekeeping for the production of honey.

The founder and patron of Simbi Roses, Grace Nyachae during an interview with Star, described the move as a response to the global market demand for quality supply of the products.

“The farm's embrace of avocado and macadamia farming is a strategic response to changing consumer preferences and dietary trends. This strategic move allows Simbi Roses to not only provide for its community but also tap into potentially more stable markets,” Nyachae said.

Beyond horticulture, Simbi Roses has embraced beekeeping, a venture that intertwines with ecological preservation and the promise of delectable produce.

“The decision to venture into beekeeping underscores a commitment to the environment and the natural world, while simultaneously harnessing the benefits of honey production as an additional revenue stream,” said Nyachae

Her approach to diversification is geared towards securing the future of Simbi Roses, by broadening the farm's revenue streams.

"I am charting a course that ensures the longevity of the enterprise a testament to her entrepreneurial acumen, rooted in a broader philosophy of adaptability and tenacity in the face of challenges," Nyachae said.

Simbi Roses' diversification strategy stands as a model for agricultural enterprises seeking to overcome adversity and thrive in the modern landscape.

While Simbi Roses' diversification strategy holds great promise, it is not without its share of challenges.

"Venturing into new domains demands a steep learning curve, technical expertise, and capital-intensive investments," Grace said.

She, however, says she is undeterred. Her dedication to thorough research, strategic partnerships, and continuous innovation positions the farm to overcome obstacles and capitalize on new opportunities.

"With meticulous attention to quality, sustainable practices, and consumer preferences,  we are cultivating relationships that extend far beyond its traditional flower market and opening doors to a wider network of consumers who appreciate the farm's commitment to excellence," Grace said.

“Avocado, macadamia, and honey complete the symphony of joy brought into homes by our iconic flowers. Their allure has transcended geographical boundaries, sparking interest from international markets,”  Nyachae adds.

She notes that the success so far paints a vibrant portrait of a company that has refused to be defined by challenges.

Instead, it chose to shape its destiny through innovation, adaptability, and a resolute commitment to perfecting output.
