Okutoyi to grace W80 tournament in Texas

Currently on a scholarship at Auburn University in the USA, Okutoyi is currently ranked 869 on the WTA singles standings.

Kenya's top tennis player Angela Okutoyi will feature at the W80 tennis tournament in Texas, USA this week as she targets a move up the rankings.

Currently on a scholarship at Auburn University in the USA, Okutoyi is currently ranked 869 on the WTA singles standings.

The country's youngest Kenya Open champion believes her form is improving heading to the event in Texas.

"My form in the singles is improving and I am confident I can go on a good run in Texas and, hopefully, get to the semis or even the final," said Okutoyi.

She said playing in the US college circuit in the past year has improved her game.

"My level of tennis has greatly improved in the past year. My movement off the court, agility, and service are much better than when I joined the university, thanks to the coaches and staff," noted Okutoyi.

The ITF Women's World Tennis tour incorporates six prize money levels of the tournament. From Sh2.25m, Sh3.7m,  Sh6m, Sh9m and Sh15m.

Okutoyi hopes younger tennis players will get an opportunity to play in the circuit in the future.

"It's an eye-opener and my prayer is that Kenyan players will get an opportunity to play at this level in the future,” said Okutoyi.
