Daystar Falcons head coach Caleb Bosire is targeting a top-four finish in this year’s National Sevens Circuit, which kicks off later this month with the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru.

Bosire’s charges were arguably one of the surprise packages of last season after finishing fifth overall and upsetting more established sides to make a strong mark in the shorter version of the game. The tactician believes the experience gained last season will help the youthful squad improve even further this year.

“Last season, not many people expected us to perform well. We started slowly, but once we adapted to the demands of sevens rugby and our young squad gained confidence, we came alive in the last four tournaments to finish fifth overall,” said Bosire.

He added: “Our target this year is to improve on that fifth-place finish, and we believe we have an opportunity to do even better.”

The varsity side is expected to feature in this weekend’s Ruff and Tuff Sevens at the Racecourse Grounds on July 11 as part of preparations for the upcoming circuit. Daystar have been pooled against Mwamba RFC, Nakuru RFC and Impala RFC, with Bosire expecting a highly competitive challenge.

“It’s a very open pool. We know teams have been preparing well, but we are ready. We have had six weeks of pre-season training, and this tournament will give us a good insight into what to expect during the sevens season,” he noted.

The Athi River-based side enjoyed a stellar 2025 campaign, finishing runners-up at the Kabeberi Sevens after losing to KCB Rugby in the final. They also finished fourth at the Dala Sevens and reached the quarterfinals in both the Christie Sevens and Embu Sevens to finish the season with 67 points.

Bosire said the unpredictable nature of sevens rugby means his side cannot afford to underestimate any opponent despite their strong performances last season. “We now have a target on our backs because teams know us better. We will have to be at our very best and take one match at a time,” he said.

Key players expected to lead the side include Patrick Odongo, Arnold Agonda, Eddy Wambugu and Clinton Amukwachi, among others. Bosire also predicted a fiercely competitive National Sevens Circuit this season, highlighting defending champions KCB Rugby, runners-up Strathmore Leos, Menengai Oilers and Kabras Sugar RFC as some of the top contenders.

“It will be tough because we are competing against well-funded corporate sides and strong community clubs, but the boys are ready and raring to go,” Bosire said.
