Ruff N Tuff 7s expands as defending champions Strathmore begin title defence

The one-day tournament at Ngong Racecourse Grounds will feature eight men's teams alongside a women's clash between Kenya Harlequins and Mwamba, marking an expansion of the competition beyond its inaugural men's-only edition.

Strathmore return as defending champions after defeating Mwamba RFC 21-5 in last year's final, while Kenya Harlequins claimed third place by beating hosts Nondescripts RFC.

The title holders have been handed a difficult route to the knockout stages after being drawn in Pool A with hosts Nondescripts RFC, Kenya Harlequins and Blak Blad. Pool B features last year's runners-up Mwamba RFC, Nakuru RFC, Impala RFC and newcomers Daystar Falcons, who replace USIU.

Tournament director Wanyaga said the competition continues to provide a platform for community clubs while coinciding with Nondescripts RFC's 103rd anniversary celebrations.

"As part of this tournament, it's another way of giving back to the community. All eight participating clubs are community-based clubs and institutions, bringing together players, coaches, match officials, volunteers and supporters," Wanyaga said.

He added that the introduction of the women's exhibition fixture recognises the contribution Kenya Harlequins and Mwamba have made to the growth of the women's game in the country.

Organising committee chair Muturi said the tournament has grown since its launch, with hospitality capacity increasing by 35 per cent and an international referee from Zimbabwe joining this year's officiating panel.

"We're here for the long run. When we staged the first edition, we didn't know what to expect. Now the challenge is whether we can make it bigger and better, and I think we can," Muturi said.

He added that the tournament offers Kenya Cup clubs another competitive platform to showcase local talent ahead of the rugby sevens season.

The tournament is sponsored by Crown Paints, Coca-Cola, SportPesa and Hemingways.
