Menengai Oilers will seek better decision-making and execution in the setpiece as they focus on next month's Enterprise Cup.

Oilers saw their quest for a maiden Kenya Cup title go up in smoke after falling to KCB in the semis.

Coach Gibson Weru is still coming to terms with the loss to KCB but sees the Enterprise Cup as an opportunity to correct their wrongs.

"Our decision-making — when to go for a lineout and go for a penalty — must be better. Our setpiece did not deliver against KCB. We have a lot of work to do though we are not far from being a title-winning team,” observed Weru.

The Nakuru-based side had defeated KCB 21-7 in the pool phase to end their eight-match unbeaten run and had matched the bankers in the tense semifinal before a last-minute try by Bob Muhati ended their hopes.

The former Nakuru playmaker said they have to improve their goalkicking after missing three penalties in the loss.

“We had young flyhalf (Abutwalib Wesonga), who is in his first full season. I can't blame him but we need to do better, especially in the big matches — knockout matches," added Weru.

Weru's charges have played in one Kenya Cup final — 2022 — where they lost 34-28 to Kabras.

They have lost three times to the bankers in the semifinal but Weru has tipped his young charges to win the league.

"We have learnt our lessons from this campaign. I believe I have a team that can compete and win the league soon," he said.

Weru's charges play at the Great Rift Valley 10-aside tournament this weekend and have the Super Series in May in their sights too.

Oilers players will join the Cheetahs franchise alongside cross-town rivals Nakuru and Homeboyz.
