Shujaa finish third at Uruguay Challenger Series

Shujaa bagged the bronze medal at the Montevideo Sevens tournament with a 31-12 win over Chile on Monday morning.

It was a topsy-turvy weekend for Kevin Wambua’s charges, who earned 16 points to stay joint top alongside Uruguay with one round left in Munich, Germany, in May.

Against the South Americans, Shujaa started brightly with with debutant Lamec Ambetsa opening the scoring. Ernest Tchimino levelled matters for the Chileans a minute later for 5-5.

However, the Chileans scored a late consolation through Luca Strabuchi.

Onyala was satisfied with the performance but still wants more.

“There are a couple of areas we need to improve ahead of the next tournament,” he said.

Shujaa, winners of the opening leg in Dubai in January, fell 21-14 to Hong Kong China in the semis with Omondi and Ben Salem on the scoresheet

In the quarters, Kenya edged Uganda 7-5 in a tense encounter. Shujaa beat Portugal 19-12 and Tonga 17-14 but lost 17-0 to Georgia in the pool matches.

Hosts Uruguay beat Hong Kong China 28-0 in the final.

Kenya Lionesses had a weekend to forget, finishing eighth overall .They beat Papua New Guinea 31-12 but lost 12-0 to China and 21-7 to Belgium in the pool matches.

However, Dennis Mwanja’s charges still qualified for the quarters due to a good points differential, but lost to China, again, 19-7.
