With two games to go in the KRU Championship, the hunt for the two home semi-final slots is being contested by three teams.

They include leaders Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST), second-placed Daystar Falcons and South Coast Pirates.

The promotion-chasing trio won their respective weekend games as the battle for two Kenya Cup slots intensified. The teams have won seven games and lost once each in eight mathces.

Masinde Murilo thrashed hosts United States International University Africa’s Martials 39-15 while Daystar Falcons overcame hosts University of Eldoret’s Trojans 38-8. Elsewhere, third-placed South Coast Pirates beat hosts Kabarak University 17-7 in Nakuru.

Masinde Muliro lead the standings with 34 points, same as the Daystar Falcons but the former Kenya Cup side has a better goal difference. Kwale-based Pirates are third on 31 points while Impala are a distant fourth on 23 points.

MMUST coach John Asila said the chase for a home semifinal is getting tougher.

“We have two games against playoff chasing Western Bulls and Mombasa, who are fighting to escape the drop. These are two difficult ties but we shall push on. Our dream of returning to Kenya Cup is still alive,” said Asila.

On their win against USIU-A, Asila said: “It was a massive win for us. Any slip up at this stage will be costly.”

On Saturday, Mombasa RFC moved from the relegation zone after a hard-fought 18-17 win over Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s Cougars.
