Several top schools from Nyanza will use this weekend’s Kisii School at 90 celebration tournament to test their teams ahead of the Term One Games.

The school’s games master, Hesbon Chweya, said more than 30 schools, universities, clubs and other institutions of higher learning have confirmed participation.

The two-day tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday with Kisii School, Kisii University, Getembe Primary and Nyanchwa Boys serving as venues.

“We anticipate a highly competitive tournament because current and former regional and national champions have confirmed participation,” Chweya told the Star.

The tournament will feature soccer, rugby 15s, basketball, handball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, hockey, lawn tennis, chess, scrabble and netball. Teams will pay a participation fee of Sh2,500.

“We expect former national rugby and basketball champions Maseno School, former regional rugby and basketball champions Agoro Sare, former Nyanza hockey champions Homa Bay School, our local rivals Nyanchwa Boys and Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho,” Chweya said.

Kisii University and Kisii National Polytechnic have also confirmed participation.

Chweya said Kisii School will use the tournament as part of preparations to defend their regional 15s title. Kisii School upset powerhouses St Mary’s Yala and Maseno School to lift the Nyanza region title last year.

“We want to test our boys before the games start in February. Being the first regional tournament this year, most teams will be keen to use it to test their teams,” he noted.
