Gabriel Ayimba called up to Morans squad for Safari Sevens

The Lionesses headline the women’s competition which features Uganda, TUKS 7s, Cubs and Tropic 7s.

Strathmore Leos' Gabriel Ayimba has been called up to the Morans squad for this weekend's Safari Sevens at the RFUEA ground. 

The tall rangy forward who had an outstanding season for his club during the Sevens circuit, has been given the nod alongside fellow Leos' team-mate Richard Omwedo. 

Ayimba missed out on selection in the initial training squad named in August for the Africa Cup Sevens-cum-Olympic qualifier in Zimbabwe, where Shujaa beat South Africa 17-12 in the final.

Ayimba's late father Benjamin Ayimba played and coached Shujaa to victory at this tournament over a decade ago.

Vincent Onyala and Tony Omondi will co-captain the Shujaa side which features Herman Humwa, John Okoth, and Samuel Asati among others.

On the other hand, Elvis Olukusi and Chrisant Ojwang will co-captain the Morans squad.  Sheila Chajira and Maureen Muritu lead the Lionesses in the women’s competition while Diana Omosso and Freshia Awino are some of the key players in the Cubs.

 Shujaa head coach Kevin 'Bling' Wambua said expects a competitive tournament and will be going all out to defend the title they won two years ago at Nyayo Stadium.

“The boys have had a solid week of training this being our first tournament since winning the Africa Cup Sevens. We are looking at improving all our facets of play and being sharp," added Wambua. 

Shujaa, who are the defending champions, will be pitted against Red Wailers, Uganda, SA All Stars, and Tropic 7s in Pool A while Germany headline Pool B' which features Morans, Samurai, KCB, and Western Province Select.

The Lionesses headline the women’s competition which features Uganda, TUKS 7s, Cubs, and Tropic 7s. Shujaa and Morans will compete in the men’s competition with Lionesses and Cubs flying the Kenyan flag in the women’s competition.

Morans: Elvis Olukusi (co-Captain), Barnabas Owuor, Gabriel Ayimba, Richard Omedo, Stephen Sikuta, Ronnie Omondi, Ben Salem, Chrisant Ojwang’( Co-Captain), Lamec Ambesta, Austine Sikutwa, Cornelius Mokoro and Floyd Wabwire. 

Lionesses: Sheila Chajira, Moreen Muritu, Phoebe Akinyi, Clarice Mutambi, Terry Ayesa, Ann Goretti, Edith Nariaka, Sinaida Mokaya, Naomi Amuguni, Nicole Hawi, Maureen Chebet and Diana Awino. 

Cubs: Naomi Jelagat, Diana Kemunto, Knight Otwoma, Winnie Owino, Diana Omosso, Freshia Awino, Celestine Dodo, Faith Livoi, Valentine Wafula, Margaret Wangui, Ann Namnyak and  Zuhura Asman.
