Kenya Cup champions Kabras have bolstered their squad by signing Strathmore Leos forward Gabriel Adero and former Nakuru RFC prop Michael Mare.

Adero is a utility forward and can play either as a prop or number 8 and will be a big asset to the sugar millers as they seek to defend the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup titles they have won for the past two seasons.

Adero captained Kenya during the Africa Under 20 championships in 2016 and 2017. He also received his first Kenya Simbas call-up in 2017.

Backs coach Felix Ayange, who handled the side during the National Sevens Series said the two will boost their forward pack ahead of a busy season.

"The two have top-flight experience and will add immense value to the club as we look to defend the titles we won last season. It will be a tough season and the depth we have will be critical,” said Ayange.

Ayange spoke after Kabras Sugar beat the Kenya Simbas 25-20 in a friendly match played at the Kakamega showground ahead of the Lake Victoria Cup quarters in which the millers face Shamberere at the same venue on Saturday.

"It was a tough match playing the national but I am glad our boys stepped up and delivered. However, there are areas we still have to improve on with just a month to the Kenya Cup kick-off,” Ayange added.

Hillary Salano, Patrick Lumumba and Victor Asiligwa scored a try each for the millers while teammates Alfred Orege and Bryceson Adaka scored two and one tries for the national team.

The Simbas, who boast of 15 Kabras players, are preparing for next month's Victoria Cup and Elgon Cup matches against Zambia and Uganda respectively.

Ayange, a former Quins and Simbas international believes his charges have what it takes to win the Kenya Cup having gone unbeaten last season.

"Our pre-season has been excellent. The boys are relishing the challenge and we are looking forward to the start of the league,” he said.
