Usual suspects will lock horns in rugby Sevens at the Nyanza regional secondary schools Term Two games scheduled for Maranda School and Nyamira Girls between July 19 and 22.
Defending champions St Mary’s School, Yala are favourites to retain the title but they will face stiff competition from perennial rivals Maseno School, Agoro Sare and regional 15’s champions Kisii School.
Maseno thrashed Nyabondo 28-0 to retain the Kisumu county title even though both teams proceeded to the regional championships. On Monday, Maseno School coach Steve Oluoch vowed to reclaim the 7’s title.
“We have been in camp for the last five days and we gave the boys an opportunity to watch Dala 7’s over the weekend which gave them some exposure,” said Oluoch.
“We have a strong team and the boys are targeting to represent Kenya at the East Africa games. We are ready to showcase sun-scorched rugby made at the Equator.”
However, Kisii School coach Lee Aston warned that his side is keen on the 7’s title.
“We want to confirm that our 15’s win was not by fluke. The boys are raring to go,” said Aston.
Kisii School edged rivals Cardinal Otunga High School 19-5 to lift the county title.
Other schools which have qualified for the regional championships are St Paul’s Gekano and Enkinda from Nyamira county, Ambira High from Siaya, Cardinal Otunga High Mosocho and Homa Bay School.
Migori representatives will be determined on Friday when the county championships go down at Ageng’a High School.
Former regional champions St Joseph’s Rapogi are favourites to retain the county title. They will however face stiff competition from J.J Masime’s Anjego Mixed.
Last year, Masime guided little-known Nduru Boys to a fourth-place finish at the national championships.
