The Kenya Rugby League Federation has set aside a budget of Sh20million for their activities for the remainder of the year.

The budget will cater for the league campaign, training equipment and national team trials in South Africa in December.

Chairman Nyakwaka Adhere said the newly-formed federation was banking on sponsors and well-wishers to fund their activities for this and next year.

“We are looking at sponsors to come on board and support this sport which I do believe will be a plus for our young people,” said Adhere

The federation had their first tournament in February at the Railway Club, where Wolves overcame Rhinos in the final.

Adhere said nine other clubs have been formed including Nkubu in Meru, Winam in Kisumu, Kitengela Sharks, Thika Road Rugby, Mombasa, Ngong, Kisii, and Kakamega.

He said he was delighted to have the sport in almost all corners of the country.

“It’s very encouraging to have 10 teams so far. I expect the numbers to soar by the end of the year,” added Adhere.

He observed that they are seeking a partnership with Kenya Rugby union to exchange players during crucial tournaments.

The former Kenyan international and Mwamba stalwart said once the coronavirus pandemic ends, they will have a shortened domestic season in readiness for a test match against South Africa in November.

He noted the appointment of legendary Edward Rombo as head coach will be a big boost to the team.

“Rombo, having played the game at the highest level has connections, contacts and networks in the United Kingdom and those will come handy in the years to come as we seek to grow the sport,” added Adhere.
