Newly appointed team Kenya Captain John Lejirma will be one of the top amateur golfers at the inaugural Great Rift Valley Championships this weekend.

The event will mark the second leg of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) Series. The Naivasha-based club will see amateurs battle for positions in the three-day tournament that will run from Friday to Sunday.

Lejirma, who anchored team Kenya to retain the Victoria Cup against Uganda last weekend, said he is lucky to lead the team for one year before passing over the baton to Adel Balala.

The Kenya Railways player, who took the reign from Limuru’s Dennis Maara, said he believes the team will perform in the next events.

“As a captain, I am the link between the players and the union and I hope under my leadership, we shall maintain the winning spirit,” said Lejirma.

He acknowledged that under Maara, the team did well and there was unity amongst the players.

“We have always been one team all through and that is why we have been performing well. That spirit should continue to move Kenyan golf to a greater height,” he said.

Lej, as he is popularly known, attributed their victory in the Victoria Cup to cohesion.
