Uganda’s Godfrey Nsubuga fired three over par 73 to take an overnight lead at the Nyanza Open, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships Series leg at the par 70 Nyanza Golf Club on Friday evening.
The Mehta Golf Club player will enjoy a two-shot lead against Vet Lab’s Ebill Omollo and Nandi Bears Nelson Koech, heading into the second round of the tournament, popularly known as Hippo Pot, at the Lakeside City of Kisumu.
Omollo and Koech rolled in five over par 75 to tie in second position in Round one out of three that will come to an end on Sunday. The top 36 will make the final cut after Round Two on Saturday evening.
Nsubuga, who has been finishing second and third in many meetings across the country, started off with a bogey in the opening hole followed by a par in the second.
He lost a shot in both the third and fourth, a par in fifth and recovered well with a birdie in sixth. He dropped two in the seventh, a par in the eighth, and ended the outward nine on a high, sinking a rare albatross for a total of two over par 37. His inward nine was full of pars with a bogey on the 14th for one over par 36.
