Nineteen-year-old Elvis Muigua defeated Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga with a shot to win the 2023 Trans Nzoia Open on Sunday.

This was the 6th leg of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series at the par 73 Kitale golf club.

In his third and final round, the Kiambu-based golfer fired one under par 72 for the victory after playing alongside round two leader Ebill Omollo from Vet Lab and Nsubuga to record his maiden title in the series.

He managed to roll in seven over par 226 in the 54-hole tournament that teed off on Friday with 18 holes, followed by Saturday and Sunday’s third and final round.

The junior player, who will celebrate his 20th birthday on 29th June fired two over par 75 in the first round and dropped to six over in the second round before sinking -1 in the last round for the title.

Playing in the series for the second season, Muigua said that he was relaxed on the way to glory.

“I had to remain calm, playing without pressure on the course. The calmness has earned me my first title in the KAGC series,” Muigua said.

Ugandan Nsubuga was second with eight over par 227 as round two leader Omollo was third with +6 231.

The Kenyan winner teed off on a positive note with a birdie in one par 5, sunk other birdies in 5th, 8th, 11th and 16th followed by pars in 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 10th, 12th, 15th and 18th while dropping a shot in 3rd, 9th and 17th for the title.

However, it was a bad day in the office for defending champion Sammy Mulama, who managed to finish in the joint 9th position on +18 237.

The Golf Park player, who last weekend won the Golf Park Open on his home course, failed to defend the title he won last year.
