Fresh from winning the Sigona and Windsor legs of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship, Michael Karanga is now targeting the Muthiaga Open title this weekend.

Karanga will, however, face a stern test from John Airmail, Jay Sandhu and veteran John Gitonga. 

The ladies' field also includes Belinda Wanjiru, Mercy Nyanchama, Ashley Awuor, Margaret Njoki, Diana Mbuba, Jackie Walters and Mwongeli Nzioka.

As a current trend, the Muthaiga Open, which will be run under the new R&A rules, will see the top amateur win cash prizes limited to a maximum of $1000 (Sh130,477) per event. The home of golf has put in place a cash prize kitty for the amateurs and a separate prize purse for the professionals," a statement from the Kenya Golf Union read.

Muthaiga captain Bob Ngugi expressed optimism about the club hosting a successful championship, coming weeks after the conclusion of the Magical Kenya Open at the same venue.

Meanwhile, 10 lady golfers have been entered into the third leg of the series.

Among those leading the pack is Naomi Wafula – who had an eye-catching performance at the Kenya Ladies Open – Joyce Wanjiru and Channelle Wangari. 

Elsewhere, a total of 15 players have been named in the provisional team that will represent the country at the forthcoming All Africa Junior Golf Championship.

The team includes eight boys and seven girls who will head to camp in preparation for the premier continental junior golf championships scheduled for April 15-21 in Kampala, Uganda.

The boys called up include Krish Shah, Andrew Wahome, Mikael Kihara, Junaid Manji, Jelani Kihanya, Lee Kimathi, Kevin Anyien and Trevor Ngotho. 

The girls are Chanelle Wangari, Belinda Wanjiru, Maryam Mwakitawa, Audrey Gachora, Bianca Ngecu, Kanana Muthomi and Rasmeet Kaur.
