The United States Men’s National Team booked a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a tense 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on a night defined by discipline, controversy and late control under pressure.

The win marked the first time the United States had won a World Cup knockout match since 2002, with goals from Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman sealing a dramatic contest that swung sharply after a second-half red card reduced the hosts to 10 men.

A controlled first-half display saw the Americans impose their rhythm, breaking through just before the interval when Balogun finished clinically to reward sustained attacking pressure.

“To keep the good balance... that balance is, you know, how we approach the game in the same way—being humble and respecting ourselves and the opponent,” said USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino, reflecting on his tactical philosophy.

The game tilted dramatically in the 64th minute after a VAR review upgraded Balogun's challenge on Tarik Muharemović to a straight red card, forcing the USMNT into a deep defensive shape for the remainder of the match.

“It’s difficult to describe our feelings because I think they were amazing, and there is no easy game in the World Cup,” Pochettino added, acknowledging the intensity of the encounter.

With a numerical advantage, Bosnia and Herzegovina pushed forward aggressively, dominating possession and sending wave after wave of crosses into the penalty area. However, the United States' defensive block held firm under sustained pressure.

Bosnia and Herzegovina head coach Sergej Barbarez praised his side despite the defeat.

“I was really proud of them,” Barbarez said when assessing his team's performance.

The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute when Tillman curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner, sealing the result and sparking relief among the home supporters.

The aftermath of Balogun's red card remained the dominant talking point after the final whistle, with Pochettino strongly defending his player.

“It was a normal action in football. You are fighting for the ball, and your feet land,” he explained.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, reflected on a spirited tournament run that defied expectations, including a play-off victory over Italy and an impressive group-stage campaign.

“This is the result that we should celebrate. We shouldn't be sad because this is part of life, part of football, especially in a big competition like this,” Barbarez said, urging perspective after the elimination.

Attention now turns to a blockbuster Round of 16 clash against Belgium in Seattle, where the USMNT will be forced to adjust without the suspended Balogun.

“Yeah, maybe it was a little bit tough, but it was never a red card,” Pochettino argued, maintaining his stance on the sending-off.

Despite the setback, the Americans closed out the match with resilience and discipline, preserving their lead until the final whistle.

“Tomorrow will also be a new day, regardless of who won or lost,” Barbarez concluded as Bosnia and Herzegovina exited the tournament with pride.

Looking ahead, Pochettino insisted continuity would be key.

“I think not to change the way we are because we won two games and people may have been surprised by our performance,” he said as the USMNT prepared for a defining knockout test against Belgium.
