As the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament intensifies across North America, the battle for international football’s ultimate individual milestone has reached an unprecedented peak.

According to the current World Cup all-time scoring chart, Argentine legend Lionel Messi and French superstar Kylian Mbappé are rewriting decades of football history at the summit of the tournament’s goalscoring rankings.

Messi has strengthened his legendary status at the top of the World Cup scoring charts, amassing an astonishing 18 goals in 28 matches. The veteran forward, who cemented his place among football’s immortals by leading Argentina to World Cup glory, continues to add to a remarkable tally built across multiple tournament appearances.

Messi recently seized the outright men’s record after scoring five goals in his opening two matches of the 2026 tournament, including a decisive brace against Austria. Yet it is Mbappé’s relentless rise that is capturing global attention.

The French talisman has drawn level with German great Miroslav Klose in second place on 16 goals. Even more impressive, Mbappé has reached that mark in just 16 matches, maintaining an extraordinary average of one goal per game. Following back-to-back braces against Senegal and Iraq during the group stage, the 27-year-old moved within two goals of Messi’s record.

Given his age, consistency and remarkable scoring rate, many football analysts, along with France coach Didier Deschamps, believe he is well positioned to eventually surpass the current benchmark. The rankings underline how modern football icons are overtaking some of the sport’s most celebrated names.

Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário sits fourth with 15 goals in 19 appearances, while West Germany’s prolific striker Gerd Müller follows with 14 goals in just 13 matches. France’s Just Fontaine remains the owner of the most explosive single-tournament record, having scored 13 goals in only six games, one ahead of Brazilian icon Pelé, who finished his World Cup career with 12 goals in 14 appearances.

Completing the elite list are Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis and Germany’s Jürgen Klinsmann, both tied on 11 goals, while Germany’s Helmut Rahn and England captain Harry Kane round out the top tier with 10 goals each.

With the tournament holding the attention of football fans across the globe, the statistical showdown between Messi and Mbappé has become one of the defining narratives of the competition.

While Messi currently sits alone at the summit, the remarkable trajectory of Mbappé suggests the race to become the World Cup’s greatest goalscorer is far from over.
