The Junior Starlets leave the Cecafa U-17 Women's Championship with valuable lessons after their hopes of a maiden regional title ended with a 3-0 semi-final defeat to defending champions Uganda.

Having entered the tournament as one of the favourites, the Junior Starlets showcased their attacking prowess, resilience, and squad depth throughout the group stage.

They began their campaign with an impressive run, starting with a record 16-0 victory over Sudan. Although Cecafa later overturned the result to a 3-0 win after the match was abandoned, Mildred Cheche's side remained one of the tournament's standout teams. They followed up by defeating Somalia and holding hosts Tanzania to a draw to progress to the knockout stage unbeaten.

However, the semi-final loss to Uganda exposed critical areas that coach Cheche and her technical bench will need to address for future continental and global assignments.

The match highlighted the difficulty of managing high-pressure knockout encounters, as Uganda capitalised on an early opportunity to seize control. Kenya also struggled to convert possession into clear-cut chances against a disciplined and organized opponent, underlining the need for greater efficiency in the final third against elite teams.

Despite the setback, the championship offered an important platform for players to gain international experience and provided a benchmark of where Kenya stands regionally.

While the Junior Starlets have made significant progress—including qualifying for the Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup and competing strongly against East Africa's best teams—the defeat served as a reminder of the fine margins that separate success and failure at the highest level.

Attention now shifts to the third-place playoff, where the Junior Starlets have an opportunity to secure a podium finish and end their campaign on a positive note.

Beyond this tournament, the experience gained is expected to strengthen the squad as players progress through the national team pathway. For Kenya, the immediate objective is to regroup, learn from the shortcomings exposed in the semi-final, and build on the positives of an otherwise encouraging campaign to prepare for future regional and international competitions.
