
Sameta Boys' celebrate after lifting the Kisii County football title/ANGWENYI GICHANA
Sameta Boys Senior School and Mobamba Mixed have clinched the boys' and girls' football titles, respectively, at the Kisii County Secondary Schools sports championships.
In the boys' final, Sameta—fully supported by Chief Principal Daniel Mirumbe—narrowly defeated the hosts, Cardinal Otunga Senior School, 1-0 to capture their maiden county trophy.
Adams Mohammed proved to be the hero for Sameta, scoring the game's only goal in the 67th minute of a fiercely contested match. The girls' showpiece was equally dramatic, as Mobamba Mixed edged out Metembe 5-4 on post-match penalties after the two teams fought to a barren draw through extra time.
With their respective victories, both Sameta and Mobamba have secured tickets to represent Kisii County at the regional championships, scheduled to take place at Homa Bay School from July 7 to 11.
In rugby 7s, Cardinal Otunga Senior School maintained their stranglehold on the boys' division, dismantling Bong’onta 33-0 in a one-sided final to retain their crown.
Despite the heavy defeat, Bong’onta will join Cardinal Otunga at the upcoming regional tournament. In the girls' category, Nyagichenche Mixed, under the guidance of coach Dennis Onyango, successfully defended their title by cruising past Nyabisase Mixed SDA with a 24-7 victory.
Mobamba Mixed added to their weekend success by retaining the boys' volleyball title, defeating arch-rivals Nyabisia 3-0 in the final with set scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-19.
The straight-sets win provided sweet revenge for Mobamba, who had previously stumbled against Nyabisia in a 3-1 loss during the preliminary stages. Meanwhile, Moteiribe Mixed claimed the girls' volleyball crown with a commanding 3-0 sweep over Kereri Girls, winning 25-21, 25-20, and 25-22.
On the basketball courts, Kisii School added the 3x3 basketball title to their existing 5x5 county championship after enduring a grueling final against traditional rivals Nyanchwa Boys, ultimately prevailing 21-16.
In the girls' 3x3 division, Nyabisase SDA Mixed dethroned former champions St. Angela’s Sengera Girls, winning the final match 12-8. Over in netball, St. Peter’s Keberesi completely outclassed Nyamagwa SDA with a dominant 39-18 victory to secure the county championship.
In neighboring Nyamira County, St. Cyprian Biticha Senior School defeated St. Paul’s Gekano Senior School to claim the boys' football title, while the girls' football final between Masosa and Don Bosco is slated to be played later this week.
In Nyamira rugby 7s, Nyambaria Senior School reclaimed their boys' title with a tight 11-5 win over Nyansiongo High School. In the girls' rugby tournament, Enkinda and Rangenyo finished in the top two spots of the round-robin rankings to progress to the regional stage.
The Nyamira 3x3 basketball action saw Manga Girls successfully defend their trophy with a razor-thin 7-6 win over St. Theresa’s Gekano Girls, while Ekenyoro Technical upset Nyamira Boys 8-6 to take the boys' championship.
Finally, in Nyamira volleyball, Sironga Girls secured their maiden county title by sweeping Nyakeore 3-0 with set scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-14.
The boys' volleyball final between Gekendo and St. Paul’s Gekano was put on hold until Tuesday, pending the outcome of appeals filed by teams knocked out during the semifinal stage.
