After a historic, award-winning debut campaign in the Kenyan top flight, Mara Sugar FC left-back Jimmy Owili has shifted his focus towards career longevity and personal mastery as he navigates a defining moment in his young career.

The dynamic defender, recently crowned the SportPesa Premier League Defender of the Season, has become one of the most sought-after names in the domestic transfer market with the mid-2026 window gathering momentum.

Heavy speculation has linked him with AFC Leopards, who are believed to be keen on securing his services ahead of the new season. However, while transfer whispers continue to grow louder, Owili remains focused on the principles that have carried him from the lower tiers of Kenyan football to the biggest stage — discipline, humility and an unrelenting hunger to improve.

The soft-spoken wing-back stunned the domestic football scene by playing a crucial role in Mara Sugar’s impressive debut top-flight campaign, helping the newly promoted side establish defensive stability while also making a significant contribution in attack.

With 12 goal contributions, Owili emerged as the most productive defender, blending defensive assurance with attacking ambition. His remarkable rise reached its emotional peak during the league’s gala night when he was named the best defender of the season.

For a player who had only recently stepped into the top-flight spotlight, the recognition carried immense emotional weight.

Reflecting on the moment his name was announced on stage, Owili admitted that the achievement exceeded his expectations. “I honestly had no words. It was a moment I never expected to experience so soon in my career. Standing there and hearing my name called was overwhelming because I knew how much hard work, sacrifice and support had gone into reaching that point," Owili said.

"It was a special feeling, but I also understood that it was not just about me — it was a reflection of the people who believed in me, and the team that stood with me throughout the season,” he added.

Despite receiving individual praise and attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in the country, the defender has remained determined to avoid personal glory. He credits Mara Sugar’s defensive success to teamwork, tactical discipline and the unity within the squad.

The defender was a key figure in a backline that recorded 14 clean sheets, but he insists those numbers were achieved through collective responsibility rather than individual brilliance.

“We have to thank God for everything. Football is not won by an individual; it takes unity, discipline and commitment from everyone involved. The defenders, goalkeeper, midfielders and the entire team played their part. The technical bench also gave us the right direction and confidence to perform. Every clean sheet was a result of collective effort,” Owili explained.

That humility has strengthened his connection with Mara Sugar supporters, who embraced him throughout the season and played a significant role in his award-winning campaign through their support and votes.

For Owili, the trophy represents more than personal achievement. He believes it belongs to everyone who walked with the club through its historic season.

“Yes, we managed to win this award, but this trophy is not mine alone. I am taking it back to the supporters because they were part of this journey. Their encouragement, belief and energy pushed us to keep fighting, especially during difficult moments. This recognition belongs to everyone who supported us,” he said.

His outstanding performances have inevitably attracted interest from traditional league giants looking to strengthen their squads. AFC Leopards have emerged as one of the clubs strongly linked with the modern full-back, with Ingwe searching for defensive reinforcements ahead of their ambitions for a stronger campaign.

Yet Owili insists speculation about his future will not distract him from his personal development. “The rumours and the recognition motivate me to work even harder. When people start noticing your work, it becomes a responsibility to prove that you deserve that trust. I cannot allow the attention to distract me; instead, it reminds me that I need to keep improving every day and maintain the standards I have set,” Owili said.

His transformation from a relatively unknown lower-league prospect into a highly valued top-flight defender reflects his ability to adapt quickly to the demands of elite football.

The modern full-back role requires defensive intelligence, physical endurance, attacking awareness and the ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch — qualities Owili displayed consistently throughout the season.

From defending deep against dangerous attackers to joining attacks with confidence, his versatility has made him one of the most exciting emerging defenders in Kenyan football. But despite the praise, Owili believes his journey is only beginning.

“The journey does not end here. It is about adding more effort from where we have reached. Winning an award is a great achievement, but it should also challenge you to work harder because football keeps changing and competition keeps increasing. I want to continue developing and become a better player,” he said.

The defender is also aware that maintaining success requires constant improvement. He has identified areas of his game that need refinement as he continues his pursuit of becoming a complete player. “I want to improve every part of my game. There are always areas where you can be better, whether it is positioning, decision-making, defending in difficult situations or contributing more to the team going forward. The goal is to keep learning, keep working and continue growing as a player,” Owili explained.

As negotiations and transfer discussions continue behind closed doors, the young defender remains calm amid the growing attention surrounding his name. Whether he remains at Mara Sugar or takes the next step in his career elsewhere, Owili’s ambition remains unchanged — to keep raising his standards and continue building a lasting football legacy.

“My target is to become better every single day. Football is a journey, and every training session, every match and every challenge is an opportunity to improve. I want my performance to keep rising and make sure that every season I become a better version of myself,” Owili concluded.
