Gor Mahia patron Eliud Owalo has challenged the club to set its sights on continental glory after securing a record-extending 22nd SportPesa Premier League title, expressing confidence that K’Ogalo have the potential to make a strong impact in the CAF Champions League next season.
Speaking during a luncheon held in honour of the newly crowned champions at Carnivore Hotel in Nairobi, Owalo urged the team to build on their domestic success and emulate the legendary Gor Mahia side that won the CAF Cup Winners' Cup, then known as the Mandela Cup, in 1987.
"We must now go a notch higher and aim for success in the CAF Champions League. Gor Mahia has the history, pedigree and support to compete at the highest level on the continent," said Owalo.
The patron also rewarded the players and technical bench with a Sh1 million token of appreciation for winning the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title.
Gor Mahia were officially crowned champions on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium, where thousands of jubilant supporters turned up to celebrate another successful campaign for Kenya's most decorated football club.
Owalo described the title-winning season as a long and challenging journey marked by both triumphs and setbacks.
"It has been a long, tedious journey full of ups and downs, but the K'Ogalo family remained strong and steadfast throughout," he said.
He praised the club's management, describing it as the glue that held the team together during difficult moments.
"The teamwork exhibited by the entire Gor Mahia family was remarkable. The office remained optimistic, helping to keep the ship steady throughout the season," he added.
Owalo also commended the technical bench led by head coach Charles Akonnor for successfully navigating the pressure that came with a closely contested title race.
He reserved special praise for the players, noting their resilience in difficult matches, particularly against Murang'a Seal, Kenya Police and Kakamega Homeboyz, where the team showed maturity and determination to secure crucial results.
The patron further acknowledged the club's supporters, popularly known as the Green Army, for their unwavering backing and exemplary conduct throughout the season.
He lauded fans for maintaining sportsmanship even during defeats and avoiding acts of hooliganism. Other groups recognised during the event included the club choir, security personnel, Gor Mahia Queens, the youth team and sports journalists for their contribution to the club's successful campaign.
Owalo pledged to work closely with the club leadership to ensure the team is adequately prepared for its upcoming CAF Champions League assignment.
"We will continue supporting the club and creating an enabling environment for the team to prepare effectively for continental competition," he said.
Club chairman Ambrose Rachier thanked Owalo for his continued support, describing the patron's contributions throughout the season as a major source of motivation for the players.
"The patron has stood with the team throughout the campaign. His support has been a significant morale booster in our quest for the title," said Rachier.
Head coach Charles Akonnor expressed satisfaction with the team's achievement, describing the league campaign as demanding but rewarding.
Team captain Philemon Otieno, speaking on behalf of the players, thanked Owalo for hosting the team and rewarding them following their historic triumph.
He credited the success to unity within the squad and support from the management, technical bench, club stewards and supporters.
"We worked together as one unit to achieve this success. We appreciate everyone who played a role in helping us win the title, and we will do our best to represent the club well in the CAF Champions League next season," said Otieno.
