Gucha Stars' Steve Odongo (L) tries to go past Kisumu All Stars' Stephen Ochieng during an NSL game at Gusii Stadium/ANGWENYI GICHANAStruggling National Super League side Kisumu All Stars chairman Nicholas Ochieng is confident that newly appointed coach Dancun Omondi will rescue the team from relegation.
The coach was unveiled on Tuesday, and he takes over from Billy Agai, who will remain as the first assistant coach. Geoffrey Omondi will serve as the second assistant coach.
Ochieng said coach Omondi brings a wealth of experience to the team, having been involved in the game for more than 20 years as a player and coach.
“We settled on Omondi because of his experience. We have a young technical bench comprising former players. I believe Omondi will guide them as they help the team,” added Ochieng.
He added, “By the end of the first leg, we will not be in the relegation zone. Despite being in the relegation zone, the boys play some beautiful football. They only lack the finishing instinct.”
Coach Omondi’s first game in charge will be on Friday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu against 10th-placed Naivas FC. The Blue Eagles sit 19th on the log with nine points from 12 games.
The former FKF Premier League side has won two games, drawn three, and lost seven. Coach Omondi, a former player at the defunct Western Stima, previously served as an assistant coach at Western Stima FC, Ushuru FC, and Kakamega Homeboyz.
Omondi is a CAF B license holder and a KNVB football coach instructor. He founded Atletico Stars Youth Soccer Talent Academy in Kisumu. He holds a Diploma in Sports Management from the Kenya Institute of Sports Education, and his passion lies in identifying talent and integrating behavior change communication among the youth.
“We are excited for him to bring his winning philosophy—the 4 Ds: Discipline, Dedication, Determination, and Development —to the Kisumu All Stars team.” The club said in a statement on their website.
