Kobala will be out to reclaim the Nyanza secondary schools' girls’ football title when they return to the regional championships after a one-year absence.
There will be new champions at the July 8 to 12 championships after holders Alara were eliminated by Kobala at the sub-county level, falling 1-0.
The five-day championship will be held at Kisumu Boys', Kisumu Girls', Kisumu Day, Kasagam Secondary and Moi Stadium.
At the county level, Kobala beat Saye 4-2 at Mbita School. Both teams will be at the regional championships, where Kobala and regular campaigners Nyakach Girls' are favourites.
Kobala’s team manager and deputy principal, Julius Aming’a, is optimistic about reclaiming the title they last won in 2022.
However, he is cautious since most of his players are debutants at this level, having lost 16 players from last year’s team. The 16 completed their studies.
“We have been at the regionals 13 times, winning five titles. We are confident of going for the sixth,” said a buoyant Aming’a.
He added: “After we lost to the eventual regional champions, we went back to the drawing board and repackaged ourselves. We have a stronger and better team.”
He backed Junior Starlets goalkeeper Scovia Awuor, the team captain, to inspire the team to glory. Other players to watch are forwards Bephine Shalley and Shella Awuor.
At the same time, the Nyamira County girls’ football champions will be known on July 1 when St Thomas Moore Riang’ombe collide with Ikonge Girls' at Kebabe Girls'.
