Gor Mahia enterprising right back Rooney Onyango is set to make a leap to Singida Black Stars in the Tanzanian Premier League.

Sam Ochola, secretary general of Gor Mahia, affirmed that Singinda had already committed to the agreement by paying a portion of Onyango’s transfer fee.

“The player told us a few weeks ago that he and Singida had reached an agreement. We have communicated with them and expressed our unwavering support for his departure. He will join the Tanzanian side this month,” Ochola said.

A vital member of the team, Onyango has been enticed by the high-profile Tanzanian team that is home to renowned Kenyan football luminaries Elvis Rupia and Joash Onyango.

The former Wazito FC defender has been a vital member of their backline, clinching two league titles for K’Ogalo since joining K’Ogalo in 2022.

Onyango was on the verge of leaving the team last season after an Italian club showed interest.

However, the deal fell through.

Onyango’s departure will be a significant blow for Gor Mahia where his masterclass act earned him a call-up to the national team.

Onyango donned the national colours for the first time in 2023 when he featured in an international friendly match where Kenya held Russia to a 2-2 draw in Turkey.

Despite his exceptional skill on the field, Onyango has had a number of disciplinary problems and was once suspended by the side following a disagreement with former head coach Leonardo Neiva.

Meanwhile, Ochola has disclosed that the team will release five players during the January transfer window.

“We have decided to let go of five players. We are not interested in extending the contracts of those whose terms are nearing the end, and we will send those who are still under contract on loan to other teams for game time,” he said.

They are rummaging through the transfer market for a top striker as they eye a return to continental football.

“We need a good striker to help us win the Champions League, so we are concentrating on getting ready to play in the competition,” he said.

Gor Mahia are third on the log with 24 points, three adrift of leaders KCB and Tusker.
