Junior Starlets celebrate after qualifying for the Fifa U17 World Cup

Butere Girls forward Lorna Faith, Madira's Valerie Nekesa and Kenya Police Bullets' defender Elizabeth Ochaka are among 35 Junior Starlets players called up for training ahead of the FIFA U-17  Women’s World Cup.

The eighth edition of the World Cup will be held in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to  November 3 this year.

Faith was instrumental for Butere during the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) while Nekesa brings immense experience from the Kenya Women Premier League side with Soccer Assassins.

Ochaka on the other hand is currently playing at the CAF Women's Champions League Cecafa Zonal Qualifiers in Ethiopia, where they have qualified for the semifinals.

Starlets, who are making their first appearance in the tournament, are in Pool 'C' alongside heavyweights and regulars North Korea, Mexico and England.

Group 'A' has the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, New Zealand and Nigeria while Group B includes Spain, the USA, South Korea and Colombia.

Group 'D' comprises Japan, Poland, Brazil and Zambia.

The team will begin their World Cup campaign against England, the 2016 losing finalists, on October 18, face two-time champions North Korea and conclude their preliminary stage fixtures against Mexico on October 24.

The Mildred Cheche-led side are expected to report to camp on Saturday where they will train for 17 days.

They then travel to Spain on September 10 for another training camp before travelling to the Dominican Republic on October 4.

Starlets punched the ticket to the World Cup in June after outclassing Burundi 5-0 on aggregate in the fourth and final round of the qualification.

Consequently, they became the first Kenyan football team to qualify for a Fifa World Cup.

Before facing Burundi, the Kenyan girls had eliminated Ethiopia 3-0 on aggregate in the third round with all goals scored in the return match at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Earlier, there were fears that eight players would skip the tournament since it coincides with the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education (KCSE) examinations.

However, this was resolved after the Kenya National Examinations Council promised to necessitate a special exam for the affected students.
