The national government has taken over renovation works at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega after the county government admitted to facing financial challenges, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has said.

The CS said the national government will now fast-track the upgrade as preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations gather pace.

“We had some hitches in regard to the transition of the project from the county to the national government but that has now been sorted out and we are now good to go,” Namwamba said.

“The national government had allocated Sh760 million for the project under the previous arrangement but the county government of Kakamega has requested the national government to take over the project, which informs a review of the funding module.

“The county government have pleaded with the ministry (of sports) to take over the project due to the financial challenges the county is facing," he added.

"We are, therefore, revising those targets and the financing arrangement to see how we can take over the commitments that the county government had made.

“It’s a question of transition from one arrangement to another. This is a contract that was entered into by the previous government of Kakamega County."

He added: "The current county government inherited this arrangement. Now the national government has become an inheritor of an arrangement that had a number of issues that touch on design, nature of the contract and targeted timelines."

Namwamba said the national government has set new targets and timeliness in their quest to run the project smoothly.

The CS was accompanied by Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala.
