Omuga began their Lake Region Kenya Technical Training Institutions Sports Organization men’s football campaign with a 4-1 win over Nyakach in Siaya County.
Striker Felix Ochieng’ grabbed a first-half brace as Omuga declared their intentions to defend their title. Tony Jard pulled one back for Nyakach on the stroke of halftime.
Nyakach’s hopes of a comeback were shattered when Fredrick Otieno and Lawrence Agogo struck in the second half at Siaya Technical Training Institute.
Omuga captain Lawrence Ogango said: “We want to defend our title and go for the national crown. We are using the regional championships as a warm for the nationals. We have a very good squad."
Hosts Siaya Institute of Technology beat Riat 4-2 in post-match spot kicks to storm the round of 16. The teams played to a goalless draw in regulation time. Rachuonyo, who were expected to play off Pool 'A', were no-show.
Siaya, the netball defending champions beat Rangwe 41-4 in their opening match and got a walkover against the absent Mabera.
Omuga beat Keroka TTI 43-1 while Kakrao beat Nyamira National Polytechnic 13-0.
Siaya saw off Kisii National Polytechnic 25-20 in the opening game of the women’s basketball as Mawego beat RIAT 42-14.
More than 29 technical institutions from Nyanza counties are battling for honours in football, basketball (men and women) and netball (women).
The event will be used to select a team to the nationals at Sigalagala National Polytechnic next week.
