National Super League side Gusii FC team manager Hillary Jim has admitted they face a herculean task in their fight for survival.

“It’s a tough task but I believe the boys are up to the challenge,” said Jim who attributed the team’s poor show in the league to lack of funds. The team has so far dished out two walkovers.

He said results from the last two games—a 2-1 win against Mulembe and a barren draw against Migori Youth— have boosted the team’s morale as they seek to avoid the drop.

Gusii host top-of-the-log and promotion favourites Mara Sugar at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho on Saturday.

“It will not be an easy game because the two teams need the three points. However, the boys are psyched up. We are not scared of Mara Sugar and our target is three points,” said Jim.

At the same time, the team manager confirmed the departure of veteran coach Joseph Ongoro. He said they decided to replace coach Ongoro, who left the club three weeks ago, without notice.

“He just disappeared and his mobile phone remains switched off,” said Jim. Former forward Dennis Onkangi now takes over from Ongoro as head coach for the beleaguered Kisii-based side. Phillip Mwangeli will assist him.

Jim said former coach Kassim Otieno who was fired by the Micheal Olunga Foundation (MOFA) after failing to guide the team to the NSL has been recalled to help steady the ship.

"He will work alongside Onkangi to help us survive relegation. He is an experienced coach and his expertise will come in handy at this crucial stage,” added Jim.
