Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry wants his charges to step on the gas pedal as the Kenyan Premier League title charge enters the homestretch.

In an interview on Friday, McKinstry said they will be keen to sustain the momentum that has put them at the league summit as they hunt for a record 21st topflight title.

“We want to keep pushing and extend our lead at the top of the standings. We are happy with where we are so far but we are greedy, we want more, and we want to score more goals than we did last season. We want to concede fewer goals too and win more games,” McKinstry remarked.

“We’ve got a little to do to achieve those objectives in the last nine games of the season. If we achieve those objectives then it’s likely we’ll be champions. We have to keep pushing,” he added.

Drawing an analogy to last weekend’s closely-contested fixtures, the Irishman said it would be suicidal for his charges to rest on their laurels, given their opponents are hammering away indefatigably to survive the season’s vicious battle.

“All our rivals have tough games coming up. Every game is a different type of encounter. You have to be intelligent in every game and play it to your best,” he said.

“It was an interesting weekend in the KPL last week with Kenya Police the only team in the top half of the table to win a game. That’s unique. I am sure the odds of that happening would be extremely long, but that’s the nature of football. Football is unpredictable.”

McKinstry reckons there is room for improvement despite their eight-point advantage. They have 51 points while chasers Tusker and Bandari are tied on 43.
