Kisii University men’s football team are ready to take on rivals at the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Western Conference playoffs scheduled for this weekend at Rongo University.

Kisii sealed the slot in the playoffs after a 1-1 draw with Rongo University in a match that was replayed at Kisii School. The game was abandoned three weeks ago due to crowd trouble at Rongo University.

On Friday, Kisii University games tutor David Obungu said his charges are ready for the battle against their rivals.

“Our target is a slot at the national playoffs. We have played a series of buildup matches and we are looking forward to a successful outing,” said Obungu.

Last weekend, Kisii University edged Nyanza region champions Agoro Sare 5-4 on penalties to win the Kisii School @90 tournament.

Two teams will qualify for the national playoffs to be held at Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in March.

MMUST,  Kibabii, Tom Mboya, Kabianga and Maseno Universities are also in contention. Maseno University bagged last year’s title after beating Kabianga.

KUSA Western Conference secretary Abraham Ong’ong’a said the draws will be done on Saturday morning.

In the women’s rugby 7s, Rongo University, captained by Marvel Laura, will seek to dethrone last year’s winners Maseno University. Kabianga completes a three-team contest.

Laura said: “We know Maseno will be the toughest team being the national champions. However, we have prepared well and we are ready to lift the regional title."

Women’s handball and men’s volleyball titles are also up for grabs.
