Tusker head coach Robert Matano insists they can still effectively charge for the title despite their lacklustre performance this season.

The Brewers squandered another brilliant opportunity to turn around their fortunes after playing out to a barren draw against fellow Kenyan Premier League behemoths AFC Leopards at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Monday.

The Ruaraka-based beer-makers will only have themselves to blame after squandering a flurry of chances that could have sealed them maximum points in the closely contested encounter.

"We had a good game the draw notwithstanding. Our opponents are experienced in this competition and we expected a tough match so the outcome is not surprising," Matano said.

"We are not badly off and I believe we still have a chance to contend successfully for the title if we can focus on our remaining matches," Matano added.

Fondly referred to as The Lion by dotting football fans, Matano attributed their slow start to a long list of injuries.

He welcomed the return of centrebacks Tom Teka and Charles Momanyi who had been ruled out of action due to a lengthy spell of injuries.

"We have not had it very easy this season. Quite a number of our dependable squad members suffered injuries and to some extent, this affected the team's performance.

"I'm glad the newly acquired players have finally begun to gel with the rest of the squad and soon we shall be witnessing positive results," Matano said.

Concerning their chances at the title this season, Matano said it would be a big mistake to entirely rule them out of contention.

"We have only played 12 matches and we have a game in hand, therefore, it would be a big mistake to write us off," Matano remarked.

"This is not the first time we have experienced a slow start to the season. We have always risen above the odds to lift the trophy and we hope this season will be no different," Matano said.

The outcome left  Tusker 12th on the log with 15 points— 12 adrift of leaders Gor Mahia who moved to the top following a 2-1 win over Kariobangi Sharks at the same venue on Sunday. On the other hand, AFC Leopards remain 14th with 11 points.
