Akwana announced as Sofapaka interim coach

Ezekiel Akwana has been named the new Sofapaka interim coach after the departure of Francis Haringingo whose contract with the club was terminated on a mutual basis.

Akwana will be assisted by  Hillary Echesa, who has been serving as team manager as they seek to rescue Batoto ba Mungu from the poor run of results.

The team has played five games so far in the 2023/24 FKF Premier League season, losing four games and drawing one. Sofapaka currently have a single point and sit bottom of the league.

According to the club, Akwana's first assignment will be to oversee the upcoming league match against Murang'a Seal. 

“In light of these challenges, Akwana will step in as the acting head coach and will be assisted by Echesa. They are expected to lead the team in their upcoming match against Muranga Seal FC,” a statement revealed.

Batoto Ba Mungu had recently acquired the services of Akwana as an assistant coach on a one-year contract deal.

Akwana is a former Kenya international player and was part of the team that won Sofapaka the league title in 2009. He played for Sofapaka from 2008-2011 before joining Posta Rangers and later ending his career at AFC Leopards.

Akwana’s last stint as a coach was at Murang’a Seal, where he served for a short period of five months. He also served as an assistant coach in Mathare United.

Batoto Ba Mungu President, Elly Kalekwa, expressed his gratitude to coach Haringingo and his assistant for their dedication to the team.

He said the team had brought in a lot of new players thus it would take some time before the team starts producing positive results.
