Waweru among three Kenyan referees selected for Afcon 23

Three Kenyan referees are part of a select 75 number that has been chosen by the Confederation of African Football to take part in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations preparation course.

The trio is Peter Waweru Kamaku, Gilbert Cheruiyot, and Yiembe Stephen.  

Caf on Tuesday released a list of 32 referees, 33 assistant referees, four Video Assistant referees (VAR) as well as six technical and physical instructors.

The referees will undergo rigorous training in preparation for the Cup of Nations set for Ivory Coast early next year.

Waweru, a professor of pure mathematics at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, has been a referee in the FKF Premier League since 2013 and a Fifa-listed referee since 2017.

The 40-year-old has officiated in various Fifa tournaments such as Afcon under-20 in 2019, Afcon 2019 in Egypt, the 2019 under-17 World Cup in Brazil, and in the 2021 Chan tournament final between Morocco and Mali.

Cheruiyot shot to a new high in his career after officiating in the second leg of the 2023 Caf Champions League final played on June 12 between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca.

Yiembe served as an assistant referee in the 2023 Caf under-23 final match between Morocco and Egypt.

From the pool of 75 about nine come from the Cecafa region.

Cecafa region is made up of Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar.

Burundi and Kenya both have three referees while Djibouti, Rwanda and Somalia all have one referee each for the tournament.
